EDITORS NOTES
To make things more interesting, the race uses a system of 'hares and hounds'. The slower hares are given a five minute head start as the hounds set out to catch and beat them. One objective is to reduce the spread of times and to keep swimmers of different abilities in a close group; another objective is to allow most swimmers to finish together. Novice swimmers are automatically placed with the hares and receive a five minute head start. The distance is attractive for triathletes seeking open water swim routes and Robben Island hopefuls will find these events a useful part of their training regime. The cold water is a feature of this race and attracts regular enquiries from overseas tourists planning to visit the Mother City.
To compete in this event you should be able to comfortably cover twice the distance in a pool, as the time and fatigue rate in cold water is considerably higher than in normal circumstances. The race briefing outlines identified hazards and should you withdraw you must check-in, as the headcount needs to balance. Wetsuit competes against wetsuit and Channel Rules compete within Channel Rules, which is defined as swim cap, goggles and swimming costume. The race results are published by category for comparison purposes. Fins are allowed and are noted in the results. Refer to the first race in September 2017 for background on the event.
