The dam is in the Ntshingwayo Nature Reserve. Some of the road signs may still refer to the dam and reserve as Chelmsford. The distance from Johannesburg is 350 kilometres and the trip takes under four hours. Turn off the national road N11 about 18 kilometres from Ladysmith on the north side of the dam. About 20 kilometres outside Newcastle is an intersection showing Normandine to the right on district road D210. The gate is six kilometres along this road.

THE SWIM

On entering the water the first buoy is slightly off to the left. Once you have taken the first right-turn the second leg involves a long straight swim to the second buoy. Due to its length there is an intermediate buoy to aid with navigation. The second turning buoy signals the home stretch and the finish line is on the slipway.
