DIRECTIONS

Race Start Coordinates: -28.288580894020914, 27.16128095984459

Race Finish Coordinates: None

GPS coordinates: -28.28858, 27.16128 The swim takes place at the Allemanskraal Dam Winburg District in the Free State. If travelling from Johannesburg, take the N1 Bloemfontein highway. Travel through Kroonstad and Ventersburg. Turn left at the signpost marked William Pretorius/Aldam, which is 18 kilometres outside Ventersburg. The dam is nine kilometres down this road. Note: When you get to a point in the road with the dam wall in front of you, there is a sand road to the right marked Allemanskraal Dam. Ignore this turnoff and continue, as the road runs directly into the gate of the venue where the swim takes place. The total distance from the north of Johannesburg is 290 kilometres, and the trip takes around three hours.
THE SWIM

For at least the last two years the swim has struggled with low water levels. However, there is more than enough water for the event. The course is in the form of an offset square. From the start, the swim goes directly out to the first buoy, around three more buoys and back to the finish. There is very thick clay at the edge of the dam where the start and finish takes place. This makes the first and last 50 metres very difficult as the water is too shallow for swimming and the mud is deep. Running or walking is therefore extremely strenuous.
WATER QUALITY
This is a silt dam, and even though the water is clean, it is light brown with zero visibility. You cannot even see your elbow when you swim. The temperature is refreshing.

LAYOUT
The swim takes place at Africa’s Best Aldam Resort. There are extensive facilities, including toilets, showers, change rooms and a tuck shop. However, because of the low-water conditions, all onsite facilities are some distance from where the event takes place. Ample parking is available but there is no shade, and it gets very hot. Bring along sun protection.
