The water is clean and relatively clear with a visibility of about two metres. There is water-grass for the first 30 metres but it does not pose any real problems.

LAYOUT

The start and finish points are close to one another. The race consists of one-lap with a wet start and a relatively rocky bottom.

FACILITES

Day visitors to Sun City must park their cars at the entrance and catch the dedicated busses to the Cabanas complex. The swim entry fee includes Sun City entrance fees for day visitors and access to the Valley of the Waves. The facilities within the Sun City complex are exceptional, with good ablution facilities, shops and restaurants that sell almost all types of food and drinks. There is also a huge expanse of lawn and lots of shady trees.

EDITORS NOTES

The Sun City swim was started in 1998 and in 2017 the race celebrates its 19th anniversary. Started by enthusiastic open water swimmers from Gauteng Masters Swimming, many are still on the organising committee today. The inaugural sponsor was Sun City and they have remained committed since the start.

EDITORS NOTES

This is traditionally the first swim of the season and serves as an ideal preparation for Midmar. It is well supported and gives you a good idea of swimming conditions in a big event. Expect warm weather, with a water temperature of 21°C and 23°C. There is a separate team event in which the results of all four 1,500 metre swims are used. This allows family members to swim in their correct event and be eligible for team prizes as well as the individual race. There are three categories for team prizes – Company, Non-Company and Family.
